Analysis of Digipak & Instagram Page

Digipak

Before going any further, I decided to analyse the album cover of Billy Idol's album "Rebel Yell" since the song I will be using for my music video is in this album.

The cover of Rebel yell is an iconic, unforgettable cover. The look Billy Idol chose to show in his album cover transmits exactly what he wants to transmit through his song: rebellion, confidence, and self-expression.

The cover focuses on his own person as the main element. Everything about this cover screams confident, which makes the cover iconic. The use of red and black is captivating: while red could symbolize rebellion and maybe danger (as red could be seen as blood), black could symbolize strength, defiance, and war (war against the societal norms_. Somehow, Billy idol made those two colors look rebellious, which adds to the vibe of the song and makes the cover impossible to ignore.

Back in 1983, the "digipak" format didn't really exist and the original release of the album was found on Vinyls or Cassettes.

While Billy Idol's vinyl is absolutely iconic in its own way, my own will take a different approach. I want it to be messier... more rebellious. I want it to match the energy of my music video perfectly, I want to focus on capturing the perfect digipak in a real way. I want it to transmit the message of freedom and fun immediately.

However, since back in 1983 there were no such things as Digipak I will analyse the digipak of Lana del Rey of the album "Ultraviolence"

Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence is a great contrast to Billy Idol. While he was all about rebellion, Lana's digipak is about vintage style.

The front cover of Ultraviolence is in black and white, giving it 60s' vibe. Lana is leaning against a car, which in her music and opinion, represent freedom. Her expression is beautiful, almost tired, which reveals about how the music will sound.

She uses the same font she uses on her first album "Born to Die".

The biggest surprise of the digipak is the disk inside. While the whole outside of the case is white and black, the CD is full of color, which created a shock for a lot of fans, but also a beautiful surprise.

Through analysing both Billy's and Lana's digipak, I came to the conclusion that there is a beautiful contrast between the two. While Billy's vinyl is more rebellious, aggressive and gives a rock atmosphere, Lana's digipak is ethereal, and gives a cinematic atmosphere.

I came to the conclusion that for my own digipak I want to create a mix of Lana's vibe and Billy's vibe, adding Billy's rebellious energy but also Lana's ethereal atmosphere.

Instagram Page

Idol's instagram page balances clips and photos of himself in different places (interviews, his concerts) with nostalgia, sometimes posting photos of his younger self from concerts, or simply selfies.

His page shows how he has evolved over time. Years ago, such as in 2021, he used to make more posts about his concerts and his style, but as he grew older, his style and posts have changed as well, yet he still maintains elements of the confident, rebellious persona that made him iconic.

However, for my own Instagram page I will not be inspired by Billy Idol's current posts.. instead, I will take my inspiration from the vibe of Rebel yell and his early years. I want my page to reflect boldness and unapologetic self-expression.

I want my posts to focus on freedom. I want my posts to challenge the societal expectations upon women... I want to show authenticity, happiness and to highlight that women can express themselves however they want, without worrying about fitting into norms.

My goal is to encourage anyone watching, especially women, to embrace who they are, to break the rules and to live however they want, because we only have one life, and we shouldn't it worrying about being judged or following patriarchal societal norms. I want to use my instagram page like a mood board and personal diary. I want my posts to focus on real moments.

Therefore, I decided to also analyse Lana Del Rey's instagram page, since her own page is a created like a beautiful moodboard and she focuses on posting real and random moments, which I also want to create on my own page.

Lana Del Rey's instagram is different from Billy's page. Lana Del Rey almost always uses a "vintage" filter. She uses blurry effects, she posts "random" things, like videos of her singing, or old photos, random photos of tattoos.

She also oftens deletes her posts or makes her account public, then private, then public again, and so on.

Through her posts, she is creating a her own world.
